Over the years, it’s become pretty easy to separate true hardcore martial arts fanatics from the tourists, those whose only knowledge of kung fu movies involves one of the three Rush Hour movies. For 15 years, has been bringing some of the best of Asian cinema to fans at their annual New York Asian Film Festival. Six years ago, they branched out with their Old School Kung Fu fest, which went above and beyond to revive some of the martial arts classics from the likes of the Shaw Brothers. There are still many martial arts fans out there who are thrilled to plunk down money to see those movies on the big screen in an audience of like-minded martial arts enthusiasts, but you don’t have to be a connoisseur of kung fu to appreciate it. To the unitiated, the annual series offers a solid introduction and primer to the best in martial arts cinema, often presenting lesser-known work by martial arts greats. For their 6th annual event, Subway Cinema has changed venues, moving closer to Chinatown at the brand-new theater on New York City's Lower East Side as well as moving earlier to get away from the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival. The Metrograph continues a tradition of long-gone downtown theaters like the Music Palace and the Essex Theater on Grand Street, where martial arts flicks thrived from the ‘70s through the ‘90s.
